Kite has a long history in China. Kiting has become a method of cultral communication between friends. Traditional kites usually are made carefully with professional skills, most of which stands for good wishes by being shaped as characters, animals in myths.

Below are a selection of the the most common knots you will need when building and flying your Chinese Kites.

There are obviously lots more different types of knots, and lots of variations on all the different types of knots.

For example, for those people who are into kite surfing or kite buggying there are a whole host of other knots (mainly derived from climbers knots) which are obviously needed for Health and Safety.

But for common or garden everyday flying of Chinese Kites, the knots below should be all that you will need

* * *

OVERHAND KNOT

An Overhand Knot is the most commonly used type of knot when strength is not your main concern. An Overhand Knot is less bulky than a Figure Of Eight Knot.

Diagram of the Overhand Knot is shown in the same diagram as the Larks Head Knot

LARKS HEAD

Metal snapringss are not really needed to attach your flying lines to the bridle. A Larks Head Knot will be more than up to the task and doesn’t add any additional weight to your flying line

A Larks Head Knot locks on itself in a similar way to a Prusik Knot.

The main use of this knot is to use it on single line kites attaching to a tow point loop to the bridle, adjust and lock in place. If it slides then it is probably best to use a Prusik Knot.

PRUSIK KNOT

The Prusik Knot is a common and well known knot amongst climbers.

It is a actually a variation of a Larks Head Knot. Whereas the Larks Head Knot has one loop around the straight line, the Prusik Knot has a minimum of two.

A lot of kite flyers (and climbers) prefer to add additional loops (just to be sure!)

The Prusik Knot is a very handy knot when the length of a line is needed to be adjusted and then locked into place.

Commonly used on stunt kite bridles and tension lines for kites such as the Rokkaku

FIGURE OF EIGHT KNOT

The Figure Of Eight Knot is better and sturdier than an Overhand Knot to make a loop on a flying line. This is easier to untie and does not reduce the line strength as much. This is the preferred knot to make end loops on stunt kite lines.

CATS PAW KNOT

This knot has the same locking mode as a Prusik Knot.

Simply pull the green line ends and straighten the U when the length is needed to be adjusted.

I have to do a kite project for school. I can't find this information anywhere! I really need to know this for my report! I need to know what dynasty invented kites and in what BC time it was. Please answer this and if you found any helpful websites that would be awesome!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

One of the earliest written accounts kites is about 200 B.C. During the Han Dynasty when the Chinese General Han Hsin deployed it for a battle. However this does not mean that the kite was invented by any dynasty or even in China. Only that this is the first documented use, not where he got the idea from. There is other evidence supporting that it may have been developed separately or even before in the South Pacific Islands where they are used for fishing. This has been handed down through oral traditions and some cave art. It is likely to have developed separately over a wide area a few thousand years ago. There are several theories of how kites were discovered. Natural leaves, clothes hanging on a line, tore away sails on a boat. Keep in mind that these are all just theories and archeology evidence may someday prove one over another.

Cast:XU Yulan(徐玉兰),WANG Wenjuan(王文娟)
Male role:XU School(徐派)
Female role: WANG School(王派)

Old lady: Baoyu has been strangely ill recently and Daiyu is sometimes ill, sometimes not.In the past when they were young,we let them stay together with no worry. But now, what do you think of it?
Old masteress: In my opinion, man and woman should get married when they are of age.Why not find a wife for Baoyu earlier to avoid any troubles.Maybe a wedding can make him feel better.Though Daiyu is a pretty and intelligent girl, but I’m afraid her sadness and illness can’t bring good luck.Baochai is pretty and obedient with an appearance showing good fortune and is blessed with virtue and morality.
WANG Xifeng: Right! Her gold locket matches Baoyu’s jade. They are like a lotus with two blossoms on one stalk.Their marriage can bring harmony and prosperity to the family. It can also help Baoyu to gain nobilty and wealth.
Old lady: Now that you all think Baochai is more suitable, then I’ve also made my decision.
Old masteress: We’d better matchmake for Daiyu in case that causes trouble.
Old Lady: Yuanyang,what’s your opinion.
Yuanyang: People say it’s natural for gold matches jade. It’s a pity to secure the lotus flower while snapping its root.Mistress LIN is too delicate and fragile to bear any shockness.I’m worried about her.
Old Lady: I’m worried about Baoyu. It’ll be a tough problem for us anyway.
WANG Xifeng: Not too tough I think.I’ve got an idea! But I don’t know whether Aunt XUE would agree or not.In my opinion, the only way is to palm off a dummy on him.We can perpetrate a fraud of substituting Baochai for Daiyu and make a cunning plan for the wedding. The face of the bride will be covered with a red cloth and maid Zijuan will be asked to walk the bride.Tell Baoyu he is going to marry Cousin LIN,and have the truth covered for a while.
Old Lady: Do you think it will be all right?
WANG Xifeng: My Old Lady!Wait till the wedding is over and all the guests gone, the rice is already cooked anyway.I’m sure he won’t turn hostile on the wedding bed and waves of anger will calm down on the pillow mat.

LIN: Why are you crying here?
Maid: Mistress LIN,would you please reason the things out.I didn’t know what they were talking about. They shouldn’t scold at me even if I said something wrong.
LIN: What did you say?
Maid: About that Young master Baoyu will marry Mistress Baochai.
LIN: What did you say?
Maid: Young master Baoyu will marry Mistress Baochai.
Chorus: The sky seems to fall down and the earth seems to sink. The soul is flying like a string-broken kite! What she seems are bridges broken, trees topped, rocks reeling and paths twisting. She wouldn’t find the way back home.
Maid: Where on earth are you going,my Mistress?
LIN: I’m going just to ask Baoyu.

That's a CHILD by the way….

It will depend on the size of the kite and the wind.
Adult men have been dragged into the air and fallen or slammed into buildings, sometimes even fatal, so do not rely on the 'yes' of people who have not seen the kite nor the kid.

A good site to ask is a national kite fliers site, like this one for the USA:
http://www.aka.kite.org/
They have a forum and know what they are talking about.

If the kite is too big it is dangerous, so check all details.
Also see the information on the kite or its packaging.

These are instructions for a simple and easy  ‘ how to ‘ on a Chinese Dragon Kite - once you have gained some confidence and experience in constructing these types of kites, then it is very easy to ’scale up’ to whatever size you want.

Bear in mind that the head piece can be made up to whatever extravagance and design you want (I use papier mache), as the lift for these Chinese Dragon Kites is provided by the tail.

DESCRIPTION

This awesome kite has a long tail just like a dragon and is traditionally flown to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

MATERIALS

RSN or Tyvek or Heavy duty plastic garbage bag Objects to make 2 circles i.e. pot lid Cloth Tape String Bamboo stick - 48″ long (I get mine from gardening supplies!) Pencil Magic markers Toothpick Ruler (yardstick) Hobby stick

DIRECTIONS

1. Lay sail plastic or tyvek material) flat and draw a 16 inch diameter circle. Draw a 14 inch diameter circle circle on the inside.

2. Cut out outer circle. Cut slits in edge of circle, 2″ on center all the way around.

3. Bend bamboo stick and form 14″ circle. Tape overlapping ends.

4. Locate bridle point on head and apply 2 layers of tape 1″ long on location for reinforcement.

5. Make 2 holes with a toothpick, 1/2″ apart. Make larger with a pencil point for bridle string.

6. Cut bridle string 16″ long. Stick through holes from the front and tie. Make a fat knot on the other end.

7. Place bamboo frame on head sail. Fold over tabs and tape down. Make sure sail is very tight when finished.

8. Make tail 4 feet or longer x 1 foot wide. Place on back side of head, ensuring top of sail is fully on head. Tape in

position.

9. Make fly line. Cut 50 feet of string and attach to hobby stick.

10. Make 4″ loop on end of string, larks head knot to kite bundle.

11. Launch instructions: Let out more than 30 feet of fly line and have helper hold and launch.

HAPPY FLYING!
